Head & Neck Cancer

can be a devastating disease that affects patients’ critical functions, including eating, swallowing, speaking, and breathing, as well as their physical appearance. Head and neck cancer can affect many locations, including the mouth, throat, nose, and sinuses. Cancer can also arise from the thyroid gland, parotid/salivary gland, and skin of the face, ear, neck, and scalp.

The multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer team at UI Health is made up of doctors who specialize in treating cancers of the head and neck. We work together as a team to diagnose, stage, and treat patients with individualized treatment plans. We offer the most advanced, state-of-the-art surgical and medical treatments, including clinical trials. Our team is dedicated to patient care and quality of life both during and after treatment.

Our surgical oncologists offer a variety of surgeries tailored to the type and size of cancer for each patient. Surgeries range from minimally invasive microsurgery and transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to complex surgeries involving the removal of bone from the face and mandible. For larger surgeries, our reconstructive surgeons offer microvascular free flap reconstruction to provide patients with optimal cosmetic and quality-of-life outcomes. We are one of only a few sites in the world that offer full-service reconstruction, including nerve and dental reconstruction, often in one single procedure.

Our radiation oncologists and medical oncologists offer nonsurgical, organ-sparing treatments made up of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is no longer the only type of systemic therapy available for head and neck cancer. Our medical oncologists offer immunotherapy based on the latest clinical trials and research to best treat our patients.
