Dr. Fady T. Charbel is the head of the Department of Neurosurgery at UI Health. Dr. Charbel is an internationally recognized expert in the most complex of neurosurgical disorders, including cerebral revascularization; carotid and vertebral artery surgery; surgical treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms; resection of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs); and treatment of complex brain and spine tumors.

Dr. Charbel’s research has led to innovations in medical devices and diagnostic imaging, in addition to surgical simulators. He is the developer and co-inventor of the Intracranial Charbel Micro-Flow Probe® (Transonic Systems Inc.) and the NOVA® system (VasSol, Inc.). He currently holds nine patents, has delivered nearly 400 scientific presentations, and has produced over 300 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Charbel is a recipient of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Cushing Award for Technical Excellence & Innovation (2017), which honors an AANS member for technical prowess and skill and/or innovation in the development of new procedures that have become part of the arsenal a neurosurgeon uses to treat disease or trauma. His honors also include the University of Illinois Chicago Inventor of the Year Award (2002) and a runner-up recognition in the Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards (Medical Devices, 2006). He consistently is listed as a top doctor and top surgeon among national consumer healthcare guides.

Dr. Charbel has been honored with more than 60 visiting professorships and over 340 invited lectures. He has been elected as an honorary member of multiple international societies and has traveled worldwide to lecture, teach, and demonstrate complex surgical procedures.

Dr. Charbel is the head of the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Richard L. and Gertrude W. Fruin Professor, at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
