UI Health Honors Black History Month: Celebrating Soul Food Journeys
This February, UI Health proudly celebrates Black History Month by honoring the rich cultural traditions and contributions of the Black community. This year, we shine a spotlight on the legacy of soul food, focusing on its deep connection to history, generational habits, and identity within Black culture.
The Legacy of Soul Food and Intergenerational Practices
Rooted in resilience and cultural pride, soul food is more than a culinary tradition—it stands as a symbol of community, history, and heritage. This Black History Month, we reflect on how intergenerational habits and genetics shape dietary practices, influencing both individual and collective experiences in the Black community.
The journey of soul food across generations reveals how cultural traditions evolve and adapt, impacting health and well-being while sparking thoughtful conversations about preserving cultural identity in modern lifestyles. Join us as we explore the deep connections between food, heritage, and the stories passed down through generations, celebrating the richness of Black culture and the traditions that unite and inspire us.
Featured Event: Soul Food Journeys – Exploring Heritage, Health, and Generational Impact in the Black Community
Join us for an engaging panel discussion on Wednesday, February 19, from 11 am – 12 pm at the College of Medicine Research Building (COMRB), Room 5175 as we explore the rich history and evolving role of soul food in the Black community. Our panel of experts will dive into topics such as:
- The historical and cultural significance of soul food.
- How intergenerational habits and genetics shape dietary practices.
