Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell

Newborn Screenings for Sickle Cell Disease at UI Health

Every baby born in Illinois is given the best start possible through newborn screenings — a simple yet powerful way to detect certain health conditions early in life. At UI Health, we’re committed to ensuring families understand the process, especially regarding sickle cell disease (SCD) and related blood disorders.

Why Screening Matters

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Early detection is key — when babies with SCD or sickle cell trait are identified at birth, we can immediately connect families to care, education, and resources.

This early start helps prevent serious complications and sets the stage for healthier growth and development.

How the Screening Works

  • When it happens: In Illinois, all newborns are screened within the first 48 hours after birth, usually before they leave the hospital.
  • How it’s done: A small blood sample is taken from your baby’s heel (often called a “heel stick”) and sent to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Newborn Screening Laboratory.
  • What it tests for: The screening checks for multiple rare but serious conditions, including sickle cell disease and other hemoglobin disorders.
  • No extra steps for families: This is part of routine newborn care — quick, safe, and causes only a moment of discomfort for your baby.

If Your Baby’s Screening Shows Sickle Cell Disease or Trait

  • You’ll be contacted: UI Health or your pediatrician will reach out to discuss the results.
  • Confirmatory testing: A second blood test will confirm if your child has SCD, sickle cell trait, or another blood condition.
  • Counseling: Personalized discussion about your baby’s testing results in an appointment with the Pediatric Hematology Clinic.
  • Next steps: If confirmed to have Sickle Cell Disease, your baby will be referred to our Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, where our team of pediatric hematologists, nurse specialists, social workers, and patient educators will partner with you to develop a personalized care plan.
